Duomo

The duomo in Milan, the largest Gothic cathedral in Europe and the second largest Catholic cathedral in the world, presses 134 stone figures towards heaven from the tops of the spires. In total, the facade includes 3,400 figures! Intricate carving covers every square inch. So beautiful.

On the day we visited, a mass celebrating the beatification of Carlo Gnocchi, born in Milano in 1902, was held. Beatification is the third of four steps to sainthood. Father Gnocchi served as a chaplain in WW II and dedicated his life to helping the victims of the war and their families.
We visited the Vatican one day behind the canonization of five new saints. Lots of holies around.
