Wet!

So, like, inVenezia there was water falling from the sky, water underfoot and water all around. We were WET!

We took a private van from the hotel to the train station. Our driver, who knew very little English, charmed us with few words and an astounding variety of hand motions that told us everything we needed to know.

We were lucky that the trains ran because we arrived in the city at the end of a two-day public transportation strike. So, we walked from the train station to San Marco rather than taking a vaporetto or public water taxi. The private gondolas still carried passengers along the canals, but, frankly, that lost appeal in the rain.
On the way we spotted what looked like short-legged tables and thought they might have something to do with market day. We soon realized, however, that these "tables" create elevated walkways throughout the city when the water rises, and it often does. We used them as we toured San Marco where water covered the marble floors.
