Each summer, Il Palio festival takes place in Siena and a major part of the celebration is the horse race. The horses race in the Piazza del Campo, they and the jockeys wearing the flags of their district. Seventeen vie for the championship.
Local businesses proudly display their flags all year long and residents prepare for the race with life and death seriousness.
Also note that pretty much any business welcome animals, including this butcher shop. That's the ninth thing I'll miss about Italy.
