Sisters d' Este

Back to "Leonardo's Swanns" and the d'este women. Both beautiful, bold and intelligent. Beatrice married Ludovico Sforza, Il Moro, the Duke of Milan. They and Beatrice's sister Isabella played important roles in financing and encouraging the Renaissance in Italy.

Leonardo da Vinci painted the picture above of Beatrice, but despite much asking and conniving, never painted a picture of Isabella. She served as the model for one character in his Virgin of the Rocks picture and he left behind a rough, and not overly flattering, drawing of Isabella.
We talk about Renaissance men, but these exceptional Renaissance women would provide inspiration to young women today.
