Siena Duomo

We left the Siena duomo for last. Each little hilltown, each city has it's own duomo adorned inside and out in the grandest style the citizens can afford. Siena's Santa Maria della Scala, as with many in Tuscany, has an elaborate front fascade while black and white stripes cover the sides and the backs of the buildings.

Different colors of marble inlaid to form intricate designs and tell the story of Siena cover the floors of the church.

The Piccolomini library, off the main church, has no windows and so the Medieval paintings on the walls and ceiling retain their brilliant colors.
